The National Research University Liebujevsky was established in Nizhny Novgorod on January 31, 1916 as one of the popular universities in Soviet Russia and was the first institution of higher education in Nizhny Novgorod.
In 2009, the University of Lebujevsky was awarded a prestigious position by the National Research University.
In 2012, the University of Lebujevsky established a complex, interdisciplinary research institute called the Institute of Living Systems.
In 2013, in conjunction with 14 Russian universities, the Russian government chose the University of Liebujevsky to be a participant in the project (Initiative 5-100) aimed at supporting programs to enhance the global competitiveness of universities.
In 2014, the university launched its powerful supercomputer called "Liebujevsky" at the Institute of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics. This makes it the third most powerful supercomputer in Russian universities and places it on the list of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.
The year 2019 witnessed a new stage in the development of the international campus of the University of Lebujevsky when a new dormitory with 8 floors of living quarters, gymnasium, student canteen, first aid center, and individual study rooms was opened.
The University of Liebujevsky has strong international partnerships with over 140 agreements. Among its partner universities are University of Ghent, University of Ca 'Foscari, University of Verona, University of Bologna, University of Turin, High School of Management at Rennes 1, University of Turku, University of Huelva, University of Masaric.
The University of Liebujevsky is a host university for 11 projects that are carried out under the supervision of prominent international scientists from the University of Dusseldorf, University of Leicester, the Extreme Lightfields Institute in Paris.
